Statement regarding the Blockade of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS)

19. Apr 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia expresses its deep concern over the multi-day blockade of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), which constitutes a serious attack on media freedom and the public’s right to information.

Of particular concern is the fact that, in recent days, media professionals at RTS—including journalists and technical staff—have been denied freedom of movement, unimpeded access to their workplace, and the ability to perform their professional duties. Their access to basic necessities has also been restricted, and they have been subjected to alarming threats, including the publication of wanted posters bearing their names. Such actions directly endanger both the professional and personal integrity of media workers.

Media freedom is a fundamental value of every democratic society, and RTS, as the national public broadcaster, plays a key role in providing the citizens of Serbia with accurate and objective information. Any actions aimed at obstructing or disrupting the functioning of this institution are unacceptable and run counter to European standards and principles.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that a free press is a cornerstone of democracy, and that media freedom is an ideal to which every society should aspire. We call on all relevant international institutions and stakeholders to raise their voices and support the uninterrupted operation of RTS, thereby safeguarding both the public’s right to be informed and the media’s right to operate without interference.

We urge international organizations and institutions to stand in support of media freedom in Serbia and to condemn all forms of pressure and blockade.
