Selakovic: Sunday's referendum will be a celebration of democracy

13. Jan 2022.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Selakovic called on the citizens today to take part in the referendum to confirm the Act amending the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, held on 16 January, in the greatest number possible, emphasizing that he was convinced that on Sunday we would witness a manifestation of statehood and social responsibility.

By circling the positive answer in the referendum, the citizens will, according to Minister Selakovic, say "yes" to a more orderly judiciary, and thus give the most immediate personal contribution to the progressive developments in our society.

Selakovic reminded that the independence of the judiciary was a democratic achievement and that with the constitutional changes, Serbia did not only respond to the requirements of the European integration process, but also took an important step towards more efficient protection of citizens' rights and creating a more functional institutional system.

Minister Selakovic condemned all attempts to create confusion among the citizens when it comes to the purpose of the upcoming referendum, because, as he emphasized, the referendum would only and exclusively decide on important changes in the field of the judiciary.

"Sunday's referendum will, in the true sense of the word, be a celebration of democracy, because citizens will have the opportunity to substantially improve an important segment of their society with one stroke of the pen", Selakovic said.

According to Selakovic, support for faster and more efficient judiciary, its greater independence and accountability, and greater independence and accountability of the public prosecutor's office would also give support to the strengthening of the rule of law in Serbia, which was unquestionably in the interest of both citizens and the state.
