Đurić: Strong partnership and longstanding tradition of relations with South Africa
In his remarks, the Minister underlined that Serbia and South Africa share not only diplomatic relations but also a decades-long friendship founded on common values, solidarity, and respect for the principles of international law. He recalled the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement, in which Serbia played a prominent role, a contribution that continues to be highly valued by African countries to this day.
“In a world full of challenges, one thing remains certain – the sincere and lasting friendship between Serbia and the peoples of Africa, especially South Africa, with whom we are bound by profound mutual respect and solidarity,” Minister Đurić stated.
He noted that today’s steps in advancing cooperation represent the continuation of a vision set by great world statesmen such as Nelson Mandela, whose life bore testimony to the values of peace, reconciliation, and justice.
Minister Đurić emphasized that the shared vision and values of our states and peoples can be further strengthened through the remembrance of Nelson Mandela.
“That is why, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, I will formally propose to the Mayor of Belgrade that one of the city’s streets be named after Nelson Mandela, in gratitude to this great man who carried the torch of freedom not only for South Africans but for the entire world,” Đurić announced.
He further highlighted that Serbia will support, at the forthcoming session of the UN General Assembly, the expansion of the Security Council in order to ensure fairer and broader representation, including representatives of the African continent.
Minister Đurić extended special gratitude to the people and Government of South Africa for the support extended to Serbia in challenging times, as well as for their principled position on the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia, particularly in the context of Kosovo and Metohija. He underscored that this issue is, for Serbia, not only one of territory but a fundamental matter of national identity.
The Serbian Foreign Minister expressed pride in welcoming Honorary Consul Bumbaširević, whose work, he stated, will serve as an important bridge between the two countries and peoples, voicing his confidence that he will represent South Africa in Serbia with dignity.
He also expressed appreciation to the host of the event, Dr. Vladimir Cizelj, for his personal contribution in connecting the public and private sectors in the spirit of modern, pragmatic diplomacy.
Minister Đurić expressed the hope that, in the period ahead, Serbia will see an increasing number of tourists and businesspeople from South Africa, as well as Serbian citizens who will have the opportunity to discover the beauty of that African country.
The ceremonial opening of the Consulate of the Republic of South Africa in Belgrade was attended by Honorary Consul Marko Bumbaširević, Dr. Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa accredited to Serbia on a non-residential basis, as well as numerous other dignitaries.
