Selaković: Renewal of cooperation between Serbia and the USA is our priority

The strategic goal of the Serbian diplomacy in the previous period was continuation of the European integration, cherishing Serbia`s traditional friendships worldwide as well as cherishing relations with the countries with which we had harmonious or even allied relations, but which were neglected or deteriorated due to the unfortunate historical circumstances. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Nikola Selaković stated this for Tanjug news agency today in his comment on the letter from the U.S. congressmen and senators.

The cooperation between Serbia and the USA in the previous period was one of our priorities, and the letter that the group of U.S. congressmen sent to President Biden is a confirmation of their willingness to set such a course in developing bilateral relations between the two countries, said Minister Selaković.

The idea about the need to establish a deeper Serbian―American partnership was supported by a large number of congressmen from both political parties, which is also a confirmation of the committed work by the Serbian state leaders and the Serbian diplomacy, primarily by President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić and Ambassador of Serbia to the United States of America Marko Đurić, who both managed to make the Serbian caucus in the U.S. Congress stronger than ever by putting in their personal efforts and showing initiative, Minister Selaković stated.

This was accomplished without any paid lobbyist, consultants, agencies or any similar aids, as Serbia is truly and without any hesitation resolved to raise the relations with the USA to the highest level in the newer history, and, as it can be seen clearly today, this resolution has been recognized by the U.S. Administration, Minister Selaković emphasized.

According to Minister Selaković, the letter of support by the U.S. congressmen acknowledged that Serbia is recognized and valued worldwide today as a reliable and credible partner, which undoubtedly confirms the correct course of the foreign policy set by President Aleksandar Vučić.

In the past, we were used to various, mostly unipartisan, declarations circulating in the U.S. political circles and treating Serbia in a totally different way, but the latest letter of support to the Serbian—American friendship, which was signed by twice the number of congressmen than any of the said declarations, is an indication of a tectonic change in the U.S. politics, and we will most certainly continue to work on it, Minister Selaković explained.

The letter which 16 congressmen addressed last night to U.S. President Joseph Biden calls for the improvement of relations between Serbia and the USA, reminding of the long diplomatic history of the two countries and their strong defence, security and economic ties.

The letter was sent on the occasion of the 140^th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the USA and Serbia and with the aim to encourage President Joseph Biden`s Administration to develop deeper relations between the two countries.
