Anniversary of the Birth of Nadežda Petrović in the UNESCO Calendar

21. Apr 2021.
Today the Executive Council of UNESCO adopted the recommendation for the General Conference of this organisation on anniversaries to include the celebration of 150 years of the birth of Serbian painter Nadežda Petrović.

“Serbia is grateful that, based on its proposal, the Executive Council decided to recommend to the General Conference of UNESCO to accept 150 years of the birth of the painter and activist Nadežda Petrović as an anniversary that will be tied to UNESCO 2022/2023”, stated the Ambassador of Serbia with UNESCO Tamara Rastovac Siamashvili.

The basis for the project of celebrating 150 years of the birth of Nadežda Petrović is the promotion of cooperation between countries through support for artists and activists, as a method to promote universal respect for justice, human rights and fundamental freedoms, and for nurturing cultural diversity and building peace.

Furthermore, the focus is on the presentation and valorisation of the artistic contributions of the great Serbian painter, as well as her activism, humanitarian work, and struggle for women’s rights in society at the end of the 19th and early 20th century.

Serbia recommended the celebration of 150 years of the birth of painter and activist Nadežda Petrović for the anniversary celebration of UNESCO in 2022/2023, with support from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, and France.
