Political relations
Political relations are traditionally very good and friendly. They are characterised by regular contacts between officials and mutual support in international organisations.
Visits by officials of the two countries are regularly exchanged. Ms Khalida Boufeddes, President of the Algerian Parliament, visited Belgrade from 31 August to 2 September 2026 to participate in an event organised to mark the 65th anniversary of the First Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Đuro Macut, visited the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria from 30 March to 1 April 2026.
The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Serbia on 20–21 June 2023, while the most recent visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia to Algeria took place in 2014.
The former President of the Republic of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolić, paid an official visit to Algeria in May 2016.
The reciprocal visit by the then Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Maja Gojković, to Algeria took place in May 2015.
Economic relations
Economic relations between the two countries mainly take place through trade, where the Republic of Serbia has a marked surplus.
According to the data of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, total trade in goods with Algeria in 2025 amounted to EUR 234.6 million, of which exports from the Serbia accounted for EUR 222.7 million, while imports amounted to EUR 11.9 million.
Opportunities for strengthening cooperation are in the following areas: agriculture, industry, especially pharmaceuticals and food, construction, mining and energy (petrochemistry), health, tourism and information and communication technologies.
Bilateral agreements
- Agreement on Legal Assistance in Civil and Criminal Matters between the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
Effective date: 29 December 1983.
- Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Algeria on the abolition of visas for holders of diplomatic and official passports.
Effective date: 26 May 2012.
- Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria on mutual encouragement and protection of investments.
Effective date: 25 November 2013.
